Nextech AR Solutions Corp. The Company now integrates technology into its services to create optimized 3D meshes suitable for 3D and AR applications. The Company has filed a provisional patent covering the conversion of CAD files into 3D models. The ability to convert CAD models to 3D models means dramatically improved scalability associated with Nextech’s 3D models for e-commerce, with the creation of photorealistic, fully textured 3D models from raw CAD models and reference images.

Currently, CAD is a function of product engineering. Industrial designers, working for product manufacturers, use CAD software (eg, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.) to design many products of the modern world. To use these CAD files for commercial purposes, the CAD file must be converted to a 3D model which is a digital replica of the physical product.

Nima Sarshar, CTO of Nextech AR, commented on the issues with meshes natively exported from CAD, “Nextech solved all of these issues by redesigning the process of converting CAD files to 3D meshes from scratch. Rather than relying on native CAD conversion, we created CAD conversion technology from scratch, creating new techniques rooted in computational geometry, computer vision, and physics. When given a CAD file, we can now create fully textured and lightweight 3D models to scale that can be used for real-time AR and 3D visualization.

Computer generated imagery requires 3D meshes

While highly desirable for manufacturing design, this poses a problem when the same 3D CAD drawings are going to be used for computer generated imaging (CGI). 3D CGI is almost exclusively based on the concept of tessellated surfaces (which are hollow and not solid). In fact, there is no concept of a solid in most CGI design tools; everything is surface. Additionally, renderers that render 3D CGI objects require tessellated meshes for optimization of ray scattering and shading. This is how almost all 3D modeling and rendering software works. Therefore, in order to be able to use a CAD design for CGI purposes (for example, to allow customers to view the product in 3D on their mobile or desktop websites), a 3D CAD model must be translated into a polygonal mesh.
