Are you a talented educator passionate about inspiring the next generation of biomedical engineers? If so, Birmingham City University is looking to recruit an experienced engineer to join our dynamic integrated teaching and research team within the Department of Life Sciences.

You will be involved in the delivery of associated education to our undergraduate and postgraduate biomedical engineering students. For this position, we are particularly looking for candidates who have expertise and solid technical training in one or more of these specialties; Bionics, Biomechanics, Analysis of human movement, Design and development of prostheses, orthoses, 3D simulation using the principles of finite element modeling.

We also welcome applicants from; Experience in mechatronics, medical robotics, design and development of medical devices that can demonstrate strong interdisciplinary expertise in; design, develop/implement innovative biomedical engineering solutions for problems related to human biomechanics or orthopedics.

The successful candidate will:

  • Play a central role in leading the modules of our Biomedical Engineering undergraduate and postgraduate offerings and associated pathways – delivered internally and in collaboration with partner organizations based nationally or internationally.
  • Contribute to specialist input/provide appropriate learning, teaching and pastoral support to Biomedical Engineering students at the undergraduate level within the department as appropriate.
  • Look for ways to improve performance by reflecting on; instructional design/delivery and obtaining and analyzing feedback from small group tutorials to large conferences at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Adapt and develop teaching materials and manage cohorts of learners.
  • Establish and grade assessments and provide constructive feedback to students as part of a team of teachers.
  • Liaise with appropriate stakeholders (internal and external to the university), to lead; student admissions and recruitment and outreach activities, including open houses.
  • Establish an individual portfolio of research and/or knowledge transfer in the chosen area of ​​biomedical engineering and engage in broader department-level research and corporate activities.

Essential

  • Hold a doctorate in biomedical engineering or a related field where applied technical expertise is associated; Biomechanics, prosthetics or orthotics, bionics, medical robotics and or have equivalent industry experience.
  • Excellent working knowledge of industry standard technical tools associated with mechanical/material strength testing.
  • Excellent working knowledge of 3D human motion capture systems
  • Excellent working knowledge of one or more professional/industry standard software packages such as; Simpleware / Mimics, Ansys, Catia, AutoCAD, Solidworks or other related software tools, as applicable; the field of biomedical engineering.
  • Knowledge of the UK HE system and ability to use a range of delivery techniques to excite and engage students
  • Demonstrate experience in; excellent teaching practice and quality management/improvement strategies within the UK higher education system, in the relevant discipline.
  • Flexibility to work outside normal business hours as needed.

Desirable

  • Have a strong record of research and research publications.
  • Hold Fellow status / eligible for Senior Fellow status under the professional standards of the Academy of Higher Education.
  • Experience managing flexible work-based learning/collaborative arrangements via distance learning mode with partner organizations (in the UK or overseas).
