How to repair AutoCAD files with Recovery Toolbox for DWG

Like any other user, a construction engineer works with the Windows operating system in most cases, so they may face similar threats.

Viruses can affect document integrity (the majority of viruses target Windows), file system issues, really anything.

At the same time, AutoCAD software is popular among relatively small user groups, so it is much more difficult to share the experience if something goes wrong.

It’s not just AutoCAD – the * .DWG format is also used by many cheaper and highly targeted programs, and their user numbers are significantly higher.

Designers, architects and even tool shop sales consultants often use their programs, supporting * .DWG drawings. There are many other articles on how to recover Word / Excel and other consumer applications because their user base is considerably larger than that of AutoCAD users.

You are lucky to find this article because we have already encountered errors in AutoCAD files, gone through many sources, and are ready to share some results with you.

We have tried several recovery methods, many of which are free and of course we recommend our own software named Recovery Toolkit for DWG

Automatic backups and backups

What to do if a * .DWG drawing file becomes impossible to open for some reason, what should you do? Hope you have a backup, right? This is really the best option, but remember that even the most careful of users do not create backups of the required documents more than once a day, it means that all daily changes might go away.

We also think that some users only think about backups once a year maybe… That’s why, we have another solution.

Fortunately, the developers of AutoCAD have already thought of different scenarios and here is how it works: In case the application is launched after a failure, it automatically triggers a file search for errors and tries to fix them.

If the automatic check is not started somehow, but there are obvious file issues (for example, some objects are not available), the process can be started manually from of To file>Utilities, where you have to select the “To verify” ordered. Responnse “Yes“To the system request”Correct all detected problems?»Later, the check is carried out automatically, you just have to wait for it to be completed.

Try the drawing recovery manager

Besides the previously mentioned automatic checks, AutoCAD has a powerful built-in recovery option named Drawing Recovery Manager, it can be found here: Files>Utilities> Drawing Recovery Manager. When starting the service, users see a list of service files that can be used for recovery.

The latest changes to the document are in the AutoSave file. If you need to undo changes to the document, which is probably the cause of the problem, use an *.bak format. It’s just an autosave file, it doesn’t contain the latest changes.

It shouldn’t be difficult, but… if something isn’t working / recovering or is not working for some reason, there are other methods of data recovery that require the use of third-party programs.

Try Recovery Toolbox for DWG

The software is developed to recover corrupted * .DWG files which are not recoverable by standard AutoCAD tools. On the other hand, no one knows, maybe even this program will be unable to help? Check it out because it doesn’t cost anything. The analysis of input files and even its preview is free. You just need to download its installer file from developer’s website and try it out. You need to do the following:

  1. To download Recovery Toolkit for DWG from
  2. Install the program on your computer;
  3. To start up Recovery Toolkit for DWG;
  4. Choose a damaged * .DWG file to start;
  5. Start the analysis of the selected file using the following button: Analyze;
  6. Preview a recovered file: you can zoom, delete and rotate a drawing;
  7. If the software is registered, export the results to a new file, if AutoCAD is installed.

If the demo version is correct and for some reason it allows you to preview the recovered data, then there is no need to save anything.

The demo version of Recovery Toolkit for DWG runs endless trial period and requires no payment. If you have a more powerful computer, consider installing the program there, otherwise be patient with the computer.

You can also use DEMO as a file preview mechanism for any * .dwg file, if no AutoCAD is installed on your computer. Everyone knows the price of any version of AutoCAD …

If you need to save and export data to a new file, you need to register the software, which requires purchasing a registration key to remove all restrictions from the free version. After registration, Recovery Toolkit for DWG the software can process any number of AutoCAD files.

The DWG file recovery service, running on a local computer, ensures that the data cannot be intercepted. The program works even without an internet connection, this could be important for those who work with confidential data. The only restriction is that Recovery Toolkit for DWG should be installed on Windows computers only.

It’s not that! You can also recover without installing anything

We are talking about the online version of Recovery toolkit for DWG, also supported by the developer.

Unlike the Windows offline program, the online service does not require any installation. It allows you to download files from any device, regardless of its operating system. You just need to have a good internet connection. The recovery process is as follows:

  1. Open the online recovery service
  2. Choose a file in * .DWG format to download;
  3. Provide a valid email address and a CAPTCHA;
  4. Go to the next stage ;
  5. Pay for the document recovery service;
  6. Download a recovered file.

An uploaded file must be able to be opened in AutoCAD. If a recovery has not been made, no payment is debited.

The online service is more beneficial than installing software on a local computer, but you have to take into account possible privacy concerns of the data collected, maybe you are working with a classified drawing of a spaceship extraterrestrial ?

If so, we understand! No need to take any risk and install the offline version of Recovery toolkit for DWG.

On the other hand, we don’t believe that a data breach is possible. All data is transferred to the online service via a protected link, this makes interception much more complicated. In addition, the data preview option is not possible, a possibility of downloading the recovered data occurs only after payment for the recovery service.

But there is a better option! Just need to avoid such cases where you have to recover corrupted designs.

For that, you just need to back up the most important documents which could lead to losses if corrupted.

Use any external media: CD drive, external hard drive, or flash drive. If your computer were to be destroyed, it is not difficult to reinstall Windows, the main thing is to protect the documents, stored on a local hard drive, their recovery promises to be more complicated.

If you could not avoid damaging the file, Recovery Toolkit, Inc. can assist in the recovery of documents, not just drawings. It is allowed to restore practically any format, in most cases the preview of the recovered data does not cost anything, some programs are free and distributed without limitations.
