CorelDRAW Technical Suite 2021 — Powerful technical illustration connected to industrial CAD

CorelDRAW Technical Suite 2021 powers workflow for industrial 3D MCAD assets and technical illustration in automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and more.

CorelDRAW Technical Suite 2021 features several updates to advance cutting-edge technical illustration and “technical marketing” in a world that has now shifted to remote working as the expected standard.

Klaus Vossen, Senior Product Manager, CorelDRAW, told Architosh that CorelDRAW Technical Suite’s collaboration tools are perfectly in sync. “We had introduced a new collaboration feature in CorelDRAW products last year and literally shortly before lockdown,” he says. In the latest release, collaboration features have been further enhanced.

Before we jump into the latest enhancements, we should walk readers through the components of this particular suite of software from Corel.

As readers may know, we have previously written about CorelCAD and its unique advantage and connection to CorelDRAW graphics applications, including Corel DESIGNER.

CorelDRAW Technical Suite 2021 includes several Corel applications aimed at providing the most professional feature set for technical illustration creation and technical marketing. Klaus Vossen describes “technical marketing” as images created for marketing in technical environments or technically oriented industries where engineering data is used in marketed products. »

An image of Corel Designer 2021, which is an application included in CorelDRAW Technical Suite 2021. Corel Designer, as you will learn in this article, is a multifaceted layout and vector graphics application that can communicate directly with XVL Studio 3D CAD Corel Edition. The new edition now supports multi-page layouts like the one pictured above.

Corel DESIGNER on its own is suitable for a variety of technical illustration roles in all industries, from AEC, manufacturing, product design to GIS industries.

Technical Suite adds CorelDRAW, Corel PHOTO-PAINT, Corel Font Manager, XVL Studio Corel Edition, plus a version of CorelDRAW for iPad (iOS) and Web. It also integrates a screenshot tool and a RAW photo editor. This is fine for most Corel DESIGNER users. Yet engineering companies like the BMWs and John Deers of the world – in other words, large engineering companies – need another companion tool named XVL Studio 3D CAD Corel Edition.

XVL Studio—An Overview

XVL Studio Corel Edition and its larger and more powerful sister version connect directly to engineering CAD data. They both prepare this data for snapshot views which are then passed to Corel DESIGNER.

Large engineering companies in aerospace, automotive, industrial machinery, etc. develop their innovations in 3D CAD tools such as CATIA, SolidWorks, Inventor, PTC Creo, etc. For example, if you build car brake systems, this data is communicated as technical illustration for several means, including spare parts manuals, installation manuals, sales brochures, etc.

XVL Studio 3D CAD Corel Edition shown here connects directly to engineering CAD data and enables technical illustrators to create, organize, and prepare 3D CAD assemblies and part graphics that are then worked on in Corel Designer.

XVL Studio 3D CAD Corel Edition allows connection and use of the native 3D CAD format for the tools mentioned above, in addition to NX, Solid Edge and open formats like IGES, STEP, Parasolid, JT and 3D PDF.

For the rest of this article, we’ll be talking about XVL Studio 3D CAD Corel Edition and we’ll just call it “XVL Studio” for short.

Christian Schmaehl, Product Manager, Technical Graphics, walked me through the latest updates and the general workflow in the suite.

In general, XVL Studio is used to extract 3D engineering CAD data (files) into XVL Studio and create assemblies, disassemblies, exploded views, spare parts, and manufacturing BOMs, as well as step-by-step instructions. step by step into illustrations or animations. The main purpose is to organize the engineering data into images of the 3D objects, then take “snapshots” (views) and pass those views to Corel DESIGNER for further illustration or technical marketing work.

CorelDRAW Technical Suite Applications

This image shows Corel Designer and XVL Studio 3D CAD Corel Edition side by side. Engineering data is pulled from this two-app workflow, but illustrators can get updated engineering CAD data and push updates to the entire workflow, saving precious time.

This process allows technical illustration and marketing teams to work alongside engineers without interfering with their day-to-day workflow and without needing to use engineering software to access 3D CAD data.

While Schmaehl demonstrated XVL Studio connected to Corel DESIGNER, it can also be used on its own, especially for exporting CAD data animations, such as step-by-step instructions.

XVL Studio also has basic 3D capabilities outside of its CAD sources. These include precise measurement and evaluation tools, including clash detection. As XVL Studio is able to merge new revisions of the same CAD file into existing work, the illustrator can start early and update their work with new revisions without starting from the beginning.”

Since it creates a linked connection to CAD data sources, it can update an assembly if engineers have updated various CAD data parts. Its search tool can detect updated parts and display before and after views of the assembly or 3D model.

XVL Studio has a robust set of visual display options. For example, you can remove all color shading and render a 3D model line view. You can colorize certain parts to attract attention and add advanced 3D annotations.
