Architect in situ – Hazelton, BC, CA | Works

Come build an architectural gem and develop a seed orchard atop a climate resilient landscape in northwestern British Columbia.

Minimum duration of the assignment: July – December 2021 (with a strong possibility of extension) – flexible start date for the right person

Work with us in three areas:

1. Owner-builder managed residence: We are a family of three – architect, poet and 9-year-old who moved from Toronto to work on climate change mitigation through ecological restoration. Your main role will be to design and finish the innovative interior of the residence, which overlooks the extraordinary Stekyoden Peak.

2. Seed Facility Headquarters: Collaborate with Seed the North as part of its mandate to collect and process seeds from wild stands from landscapes rich in biodiversity, which will be coated with biochar and diffused by air using drones. You will design and build our seed facilities, where much of our work is based.

3. Cottonwood Cabin: Complete and execute the designs for this cabin built from a single poplar wood, which was felled and hewn on site last spring. The cabin will be home to Indigenous elders, scientists and poets who visit Seed the North to advise on their seed collecting and scattering activities.

The description:

  • Detailed home interior design including, but not limited to cabinetry, custom furniture, lighting, old-fashioned plaster and slats

  • Project management and procurement

  • Work closely with local suppliers, factories and subcontractors

  • Practical contribution to construction in the execution of design drawings

  • Prepare 3D models

  • Find and order building materials

  • Follow passive solar and passive house design aspirations using natural and innovative performance materials

  • Find creative solutions using locally available materials

  • Perform assigned administrative tasks (letters, reports, spreadsheets, schedules, etc.)

  • Foster a collaborative environment where the crew works as a team and maintain morale


  • Post-secondary degree in architecture or building science

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an architectural firm and / or construction site

  • Deeply connected to the process from drawing to execution

  • Proficiency in Rhino and / or AutoCad

  • Confidence in the design and specification of all materials, fasteners, tools, etc.

  • Experience in finish carpentry a plus

  • Capable of making material take-offs

  • Able to self-edit and receive constructive criticism

  • Interest in the culture of design and the broader purpose of architecture

  • Valid class 5 driver’s license and own vehicle
