3D Math Book Recommendation

Sunday, June 28th, 2009 | announcements

On pv3d.org, I usually steer clear of the Math that goes on behind the scenes of pv3d which is also the Math you need to achieve some of the coolest tricks. The reason being that it’s impossible to explain advanced Math stuff in a single blog post. Adding Vectors, multiplying Matrices, converting from Quaternions to Euler angles, etc, etc. You just need to start from the beginning and build on each new concept.

Every class I teach, I bring along a specific book to recommend to everyone who wants to start diving in to 3d Math. So, I thought to myself, “Why don’t I recommend it on my blog as well?”

Anyway, here it is (it’s great):

Disclaimer: I do make something like a 4% commission on each book that sells through that link. I hope it doesn’t look like I’m trying to make money off you, but if it does, go ahead and voice your disapproval in the comments :)

    I need Help........
How can detect collision of a Cone with any Rough Shape(3D shape). This Cone is inside the Shape(3D). But When we rotate, how can detect that Cone is inside the Shape or Outside the Shape. Is there any Algo for this?

  • john, i just bought it! ;)

  • Thank you for the links, Piergiorgio!.

  • I recomend these titles

    http://www.amazon.com/Mathemat...

    http://www.amazon.com/Real-Tim...

Also the series of lectures "Physically Based Modeling", especially part "Rigid Body Dynamics" is great.

    Another good technical report

    - This title is quite advanced math and physics. Shows how rotations in 3D can be represented (quaternions,angle-axis, etc.). Not about games or 3d graphings, but still interesting.

    Thanks Piergiorgio!

  • kauffman! :)

this is even better than the bible :)

    ps: john...add your fee :D

    any book of physics?

  • Agreed. I bought that book 6 months ago, and I think it is a great introduction but also a great reference for 3D math. It is useful for both PV3D and Unity3D projects (and probably for any other 3D technology...)

  • i already read that book and i can confirm that's an incredible one to begin "understand" 3D, not only on the flash platform.

now i'm ending up another reading, a bit more complex than that but really really interesting and useful "Real time rendering" (3rd edition)
    here's the link http://www.amazon.com/Real-Tim...

Here's Piergiorgio's link reformatted to make me money (Yeah, I have no shame today).

    what book?
    ...
    looks at source
    whoops, add block working :)

Always thought you should have some 'chosen' books on the righthand menu and on the forum.

  • John Lindquist

Funny, I haven't used adblock in a long time. I never considered that it would block an amazon link. Thanks for the heads up.
