Laid off :/

Friday, March 20th, 2009 | announcements

I was laid off yesterday. You can contact me at “johnlindquist -at- gmail -dot- com” if you have a full-time position with health insurance benefits available.

The rest of this post is my personal story, so you can stop reading now if you’re just here for tutorials and source code:

As of yesterday, I had been an employee of my previous employer for 14 months. I had the honor of working with a team of very talented developers. I tried my best to go above and beyond the call of duty of developing by preparing presentations on new technologies, teaching as often as possible, and serving as the go-to guy for everything open source. All of my fellow developers appreciated me and I always received excellent reviews.

Unfortunately, my previous employer is such a large agency that there’s no communication between upper management and the developers. No one contacted our team and asked if I was worth keeping or if there was anything else we could work out. The big wigs looked at the spreadsheet of employees and compared it to the upcoming projects. They saw my position, my billable hours, and my name and decided my position was expendable. Yesterday, without warning, I was told, “We’re eliminating your position.” I understand that. It sucks, but it’s business. I’ll just start looking for something new.

I’m married and have a 2-year-old son. Why is that relevant to getting laid off? Because my wife has type-1 (also known as “juvenile”) diabetes. Type-1 diabetes is where your pancreas shuts down and stops producing insulin (Type-2 is the more familiar form of diabetes that an overweight person can control with diet and exercise). My wife is in excellent physical condition (she even played college basketball and volleyball), but she still has to check her blood sugar throughout the day and give herself insulin injections to compensate for whatever she eats. That process requires quite a few medical supplies. Those supplies are very expensive.

Type-1 diabetes is also an “uninsurable” condition where I live. Even if I did freelance/contract work full-time, no health insurance company would accept my application. What this means is that I need a full-time position with benefits. I have many friends who encourage me to work for myself, but that’s just not an option for me. Besides, I enjoy working with a team and bouncing ideas off of each other to make new cool stuff. I honestly have no idea what I would do if I couldn’t find a job with health benefits.

I just wanted to say to all the people out there who have lost their job, “I feel your pain today.” It’s extremely stressful, it puts a lot of strain on you and your family, and it makes it hard to think clearly about where you’re going in life. I wish the best for anyone who has found themselves in this terrible situation.

Fortunately for me (I hope this doesn’t sound boastful), I’m not too concerned about finding a new job. I imagine I’ll get quite a few offers from the thousands of people who visit this blog every day. I have quite a few connections in the Flash world and I already have a couple positions in mind. I probably won’t post again until I’m hired somewhere. I’ll let you know what happens.

-John

  • Hi,

Do you know about CalCobra? You should be able to continue your coverage - http://www.disabilitybenefits1...

    also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H...

    Best of luck,
    S. Long

I'm amazed but not shocked; a similar thing happened at the same time to one of my best friends, a senior planner who is, like you, a genius. your firm and his are thinking only short term.
What really sucks is the short term impact these occurances has on families. May you find support all around you to relieve any associated stress.
  • MikeV
Good luck, man. This is why we need health insurance for everyone, not just as a "bonus" to attract talent. As business conditions change (and they ALWAYS do) your talent may appear less important to your employers. The previous condition situation (like your wife's) that insurance companies use to weed out people who need insurance is just plain immoral.

Sometime we get lost when we face obstacle, Please be calm and try to be mindfulness then we will see clear way. I wish you get the job as soon as possible. Think out of box!
  • John, It was great getting to know you through your time with Schematic. I'm sure you'll end up in a better position soon.
  • carlos lunetta
Where do you live? Willing to rellocate?
  • John Lindquist
I live in Utah. I am talking to agencies throughout the U.S. Shoot me an e-mail if you've got something interesting.
  • camden_kid
    Hi John.

Sorry to hear the news. I wish you and the family all the best.

I have learned so many things from this wonderful blog.
  • John Lindquist
Thanks for all the kind words everyone. My job hunt is coming to a close and I should have good news around the middle of the week.

I hope all the best for everyone else out there looking. I'll post again soon. - John
  • I was laid off also in Feb 1, 2009 :(

Big companys always think in their best interest. **** them. I'm still unemployed...
  • In the current climate I can't believe the company was stupid enough to let you go, your an inspiration.

Their lose and I'm sure soon enough it will be your gain when someone realises your available for work and snaps you up.

    ;-)

John, you are a so great man that I have never meet before. It's unfair and shame for Schematic. When I open your blog and prepare to learn something new from you, I read this, and I'm shocked. I learn a lot from your selfless sharing, and I believe that most of people who visits your set all know how great you are. May be move to China is good idea, I know it's a little bit challenge, but there are really a big space for you. Good luck to you. 到中国来吧,呵呵~~
  • John,
I can definitely empathize with your situation. I think a lot of people are locked into their employers for the health insurance. All the more reason to fight for single-payer health care that's not tied to the employer.

In addition to John Conyer's bill in the house (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H..., Bernie Sanders just introduced a single-payer bill into the senate:
    http://www.pnhp.org/news/2009/...

I still can't believe that they dropped you without warning and only gave you *one* week severance. I was once let go from a small company with very low ethical standards and even they offered two weeks severance.

Anyhow, best of luck. Hope you find a good position.
  • Best of luck to you John. You have so much talent, I'm sure you will get hired soon... I was facing a situation where I wasn't sure if I'd get laid off... luckily they renewed my contract for now, hopefully it last. This economy is affecting all of us, every industry.
  • mca
    Where do you live?

Sorry about the news. Make the best of it. Maybe find a small company that fully understands your skills and contributions to the company.
  • Aloïs
Hello, John, Thanks for all, your works and helps are very great, I'm in Europe, The AS3 Developpers don't know "laid off". We are wanted. I can give you some contacts, but i'm sure that you will receive a lots of job's offers in your country. So, if you want and you can open your own company, let's go open a section where we can give you donates for that oder to pass this period . You had so help us, let us help you :).

Sorry i'don't speak english very well, but i hope that you understand my ideas.

    Thanks for all.
  • First your site is great, second I hope everything works, I am sure it well. I understand not haveing health care I grew up in the u.s.a and we never had health care, when I moved to Israel health care is provided by the gov. I was in shock for a couple of weeks. I think in reality we work hard to make some one else rich you should open your own company.
  • John, I can certainly sympathize after being let go several months ago myself. I wish I had half your talent and I know you will be back up with the job of your choosing (plus health benefits) in a matter of time. Your well done tutorials and enthusiasm has assisted me in grasping PV3D. Wishing you all the best.
  • Sorry to hear about the recent circumstances. I don't think you need anyone to tell you how skilled you are. I know it, the community knows it and whoever you approach will know it. I look forward to seeing you get back onto stable ground again so I can continue my weekly inspiration visiting this site.

I wish that everyone in this country who has gotten laid off recently could see your posting, the comments in reply, and the history and significance of this website, because perhaps then they would feel less demoralized by the sterile and anonymous machine that is contemporary corporate America (U.S.). It's hard to sort it all out when a choice made for such statistical reasons has such a personal impact, but obviously, it has nothing to do with the people, or even the resources. It's all about which projects are going to bring the best near-term margins and pull the numbers up. Why upper management never asks the question "who should we put on this project?", though, is beyond me.

And because of all that, and because people have the need and the right to the freedom to affect their own destiny, I am hopeful that Obama and team will implement a health care system that makes sense and makes it possible for anyone with the skills, discipline, and talent to freelance to be able to afford to do so.

As others have noted, this would be a great time for you to take a few breaths and enjoy life with your family. I hope you can do that, and know you will land on your feet.
  • Robert
I have just been here for the tutorials and source code but I chose to read this post. As a "barely escaped high school" auto mechanic in Kentucky, I have learned volumes about papervision and AS3 from your tutorials and source code. I can only imagine what your potential is when working with a team of skilled developers. In short, the guy who can teach a monkey to type complete sentences is a smart hire for ANYBODY....good luck Fella!
  • ray
Dont worry John. I believe you will find better job soon.
  • Hey mate,

Yeah i have to say that you hit the nail on the head. The problem these days is there is no communication. Almost no matter what you do, or "sacrifice" spare time to better yourself, the people who make these calls are somewhere else and dont care who you are or what you can give, they will get some recruitment agency to pick up people if they need them again.

Truely soul sapping stuff and appreciate your stress but things are never as bad as they seem initially and with your credentials i am sure the future is bright.

    All the best.

    Oh, I forgot this.

And indeed, see this also please.

How ridiculous company lay off Actionscript developer these days!
  • MJ
    Hello John:

You are popular actionsctipt programmer. And if you read this article, you can see how you are popular situation on RIA field. Now, Actionscript is among the most popular programming language now.
    http://radar.oreilly.com/2009/...

Cheer Up! You don't have a problem at all.
  • You are a nice blogger, husband, wish a good job find you soon.
  • Jay
I am not worry about you man! You are such talented person should be easy to find a better position. But I do feel the strength you have. Good luck to you John.
BTW, flashhawk above me was saying you could visit China.
  • flashhawk
    希望你能来中国,来中国吧。
  • infocyde
By the comments above, the developer community is pretty sure that you will land something soon, probably a better gig, with more money and hopefully health insurance. Everyone should get laid off once...adds to your character. You, your wife, and your baby will be ok. Hang in there and enjoy your vacation.
  • i appreciate so much your work that i cannot do anything else then wish you all the best and all th luck for the following days.
    keep strong ;)
  • Hendrik
Unbelievable that they just lay off a guy as skilled as you. Imo if they treat you like this, you're probably better off at some other company anyway.
I'm sure you'll find a new position soon.
    Good luck!
  • Sorry to hear about your job loss. I know the pain all too well, having been laid off myself a two weeks ago. You've got the right attitude, and I'm sure you'll be back at work before you know it. Sad that health care is so tied up with employment - all the best to you and your family. Hopefully at the very least you can take advantage of COBRA and land a consulting gig to cover the premiums until you find a full-time position. If I run across any opportunities through my own search, I'll keep you in mind.
  • ben g
"All of my fellow developers appreciated me and I always received excellent reviews." Totally true, and it's definitely our loss.
  • That's the biggest loss to your company. Any flash developers can find jobs easily these days and your a genius when it comes to AS or PV3D :) I don't think you have to go looking for jobs they will come to you.

I visit pv3d.org every day to learn new things about AS3 or PV3D. Please keep posting :)

Hello John: I am huge fan of your site and passion. And I hate schematic that treats you like that. I hope you get good offer and you will. Good Luck and don't stop sharing your knowledge and passion at this site.
  • Pedro
Good luck, John. You are an über-guru in this field and I am sure you will soon get an offer corresponding to your skills. Too bad for short-sighted schematic, another, better company will surely appreciate your proficiency.
If I were a professional developer at a company I would even tell my boss to fire me, and the whole of the department, and just hire you. You're THAT good. Unfortunately, I am just a pv3d aficionado.
  • JB
    Goodluck mate, enjoy the break.:)
  • Sorry to hear that John, but I'm positive an exeptional guy like yourself will be up&about in no time! Think of it as their loss, your gain.

    best of luck
    cheers from Norway
  • Good luck John!! Hey don't worry you will solve every problem :) If you would ever come to Italy, I'd really like to meet such a genius like you are!!
Remember that after every fall, you'll rise stronger than before. I hope to hear some good news in the next few days :)

take a look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...
I hope this will help you to find your way. Impossible is nothing.

...and don't be sad, you're talented and this is a special gift that will help you to solve your actual problem!

    CIAO!
  • Good luck John, your too overly skilled to be unemployed for long ;)
  • Juan Eduardo
John, schematic really don't know what they are doing.
You are a talent man. I lived some things like 4 years ago....

“I feel your pain today.” too. Your are a family man, because of that you are strong.
    Take care.
  • Jim
@Jeff, I like your personal site. Cool effect. When you are gonna finish it?
  • @Jim haha, no worries, most of the sites I build are pretty buggy!
  • Jim
@ Jeff, Sorry. No offense but it's a bit clunky on my Safari 4 maybe it's the browser. :)
  • @Jim - Hey! I was on the team that built that puppy! :)
  • Jim
John, are they totally nuts?! You've got to be one of the most talented coders I know. For some reason I aways thought you worked for MIT and were above the monkey world of advertising. I've just checked out Schematic's website and it needs looking at if they want some new clients. I think you destined for bigger and better things. I hope it all comes good for you very soon.
  • Monkey
Crazy Retards! Even looking at the upcoming projects i dont think thy realise just how much a guy with you skills actualy contibutes to a big project. Be lucky...
  • @Jeff Yamada - hear hear! I only use PaperVision3D because of what I've learned through John's trailblazing tutorials and willingness to share his skill. I just want to wish him good luck in finding a position that rocks and provides the benefits he and his family need. It has been hard to hear of the healthcare issues - and I have always sympathised with Americans on this issue (living in London). Unfortunately we're just a bit too far away to be able to offer anything practical, but rest assured, we send a vibe of support and best wishes.
  • Ola
I'm sorry to hear the bad news. However, I'm 100% certain you'll find a job by next week. Talent like yours is not easy to come by. Thanks for all your contributions to the flash community. I'm looking forward to read more of them soon again.
  • First of all, Schematic is insane for letting you go - it's sad when companies get so big they don't know where their true value lies. I've witnessed that first hand recently.
I often hear of opportunities here locally and will definitely forward them to you as I see them. I really hope you find something here in Utah, would hate to see you go.
  • John you're a rockstar! Thousands and thousands of people can use papervision3d because of you. I personally have built several huge projects that started out with me combining a few of your samples and making something fun.

It's a shame that Schematic is using this slowdown as an excuse to run through spreadsheets and ensure their profit margins are inline with the executive payouts instead of understanding the value that hardworking code monkeys like ourselves add to an organization.

Your story reinforces my personal belief that healthcare should be a human right, not something available only to those who are healthy or rich enough to afford it. Not that you'll need it, but you know Amy and I are here to help in any way we can, so long as you hire me after you get a rad job running the world of Flash.
  • You and your family will be ok, don't worry, try hard and trust ;).
  • ak
You are rad. I know you are going to get something better!
  • Isn't there option to be self-insured and pay monthly tax.

I got laid off 6-7 months ago (a major USA based design company just closed our whole office) and since then I'm freelancing and I'm paying health tax.

Anyway I'm sure you will get a decent job!
